Rabat –The proposal to expand the national professional football championship to 20 teams has returned to the forefront of discussion again, after it received the support of a number of coaches of the first and second divisions during the preparatory workshop for the 2026-2027 sports season, which was hosted by the Mohammed VI Football Complex.
According to identical data, the majority of participating coaches considered that the current system, which includes 16 teams, no longer keeps pace with the requirements of developing national football, whether in terms of raising the level of competition or providing greater opportunities for players and technical frameworks.
National coach Radwan Al-Haimer stressed that increasing the number of First Division clubs to 20 teams will increase the number of official matches and provide local players with greater opportunities to gain competitive experience, which will reflect positively at the championship and national team levels.
Al-Haimer explained that expanding the tournament will also contribute to creating additional job opportunities for coaches and national frameworks, pointing out that the current system, which relies on two teams fielding and holding Al-Sadd matches, does not achieve the highest levels of competition.
Regarding the involvement of young players, he explained that the pressures associated with achieving results push many coaches to rely on the most prepared elements, especially in light of the frequent changes at the level of technical equipment within clubs.
The National Framework also criticized the increasing reliance on Portuguese coaches in the professional tournament, considering that the use of a foreign coach should be linked to a clear training record and achievements, and not merely by his holding a foreign nationality.
Al-Haimer concluded his speech by calling for the Moroccan coach to be given the same confidence as foreign coaches, noting that national competencies who have proven their success deserve greater opportunities within the professional tournament.
For its part, no official position has been issued by the National League of Professional Football regarding the possibility of adopting a tournament system with 20 teams, at a time when the proposal is still under discussion among various players in national football.
