Brussels –Those wishing to obtain a short-stay Schengen visa must meet a set of conditions and provide documents proving the purpose of travel, place of residence, and ability to cover expenses, along with a valid passport and travel medical insurance. This visa, as a general rule, allows for residence in the Schengen area for a period not exceeding 90 days during any period of 180 days, in accordance with applicable European rules.
The file usually includes a visa application form, a personal photo that meets the required standards, a passport that meets the validity requirements, as well as supporting documents that vary according to the reason for the trip, whether it is tourism, visiting relatives, a professional trip, or another purpose.
The applicant must also prove that he has sufficient financial resources to cover accommodation and return expenses, and provide proof of housing arrangements and travel plan, along with attaching travel medical insurance that covers the entire duration of the expected stay in the Schengen area, with a minimum coverage amounting to 30 thousand euros in accordance with the relevant European rules.
The general rules stipulate that the application must be submitted no less than 15 days before the expected travel date, with the possibility of submitting it no later than six months before the trip. It is required, as a general rule, that the passport be issued within the last ten years, and that its validity extends for at least three months after the scheduled date of leaving the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages available.
The additional documents required vary according to the Schengen country to which the application will be submitted, the traveler’s nationality, professional and social status, and the purpose of the visit. Therefore, it is advisable to refer to the official website of the consulate or approved visa center before preparing the file. Also, the reference to the year 2027 in the title does not, in itself, mean that new conditions will enter into force, unless an official announcement is issued regarding them.
