An unprecedented school holiday in Algeria raises widespread controversy in educational circles

A formal decision was triggered inAlgeriaEnding studies early during the 2025-2026 academic year is widely discussed within the education sector, after the adoption of a new examination calendar that effectively ends the academic year in the middle of next May.

According to the announced data, the third semester exams will be conducted between May 10 and 14, 2026, with the remedial exams continuing as scheduled during the month of June, which means the actual study will stop months before the end of the calendar year.

A long vacation raises questions

This amendment practically led to the extension of the summer vacation to exceed four months, from mid-May to the end of September, which observers considered unusual, especially in light of the repeated criticism of the length of the school break periods and its impact on the level of achievement.

Criticisms from specialists

A number of those interested in educational affairs believe that the number of weeks of study in Algeria remains less than the internationally approved rates, as in some cases it does not exceed 27 weeks annually, compared to about 40 weeks in other educational systems, which raises questions about the quality of training.

Specialists also warned that a long absence may lead to students losing an important part of their academic gains, calling for reviewing the decision or opening an expanded discussion to find a balance between school time andQuality of learning.

Differing opinions within society

On the other hand, some educational actors believe that the last weeks of the school season often witness a decline in attendance and poor productivity, considering that the evaluation of the decision must be linked to the extent of its pedagogical effectiveness, and not just to the length of the time period.

This controversy comes in the context of a broader debate about reforming the educational system in Algeria, amid increasing calls to reconsider school time in a way that serves the interest of the student and the quality of learning.
