Tunisia –The Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors warned of the worsening conditions in public hospitals due to frequent power outages, considering that the country is going through a “health disaster” that threatens the safety of patients and directly affects the functioning of medical services.
The organization’s vice president, Bahaa Al-Rabhi, said that a number of university hospitals, including Farhat Hached and Sahloul hospitals in Sousse, and the severe burns hospital in Ben Arous, are witnessing repeated disruptions in the supply of electricity, while Al-Maknine Hospital in Monastir recorded an outage that lasted 24 consecutive hours.
He explained that these interruptions disrupt the work of medical departments, especially the recovery and emergency departments, in light of the heat wave that the country is witnessing, which increases the health risks to patients, especially critical cases.
The organization accused the Ministry of Health of not publishing accurate data about the repercussions of the crisis, and of failing to launch awareness campaigns to prevent sunstroke, calling for the adoption of a national protocol that ensures that electricity is not cut off from health institutions and the establishment of spaces equipped to receive affected cases during peak periods.
In a related context, the head of the Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors announced, on Wednesday, that between 150 and 200 deaths related to sunstroke had been recorded in recent days, based on data collected by doctors working in various hospitals in the country, at a time when the Ministry of Health had not issued official figures regarding this outcome.
These developments highlight the increasing pressures facing the Tunisian health sector, with the continued heat wave and electrical outages, amid calls for urgent measures to ensure the continuity of health services and protect the lives of patients.
