Tunisia-Despite the repeated security successes announced by the Tunisian authorities in dismantling drug trafficking networks and arresting wanted persons, the continued recording of such operations raises questions about the effectiveness of the current approach in limiting the spread of this phenomenon.
The recent operation carried out by the regional anti-drug squad in the city of Hammamet, which resulted in the arrest of two people and the seizure of drugs and weapons, reflects the vigilance of the security services and their ability to access promotion networks. However, the recurrence of these cases indicates, on the other hand, that the drug trade still finds an environment that allows it to continue and reshape.
Observers believe that the security confrontation, despite its importance, is not sufficient alone to eliminate this scourge, as the phenomenon requires a comprehensive approach that combines legal deterrence, awareness, and support for groups of youth vulnerable to polarization, in addition to addressing the economic and social factors that may push some individuals to engage in trafficking or abuse networks.
The seizure of firearms during some security operations also raises fears that some trafficking networks will transform into more dangerous organizations, which requires strengthening coordination between various security and judicial agencies, and tightening control over drug and weapons smuggling routes.
On the other hand, the success of any strategy depends on achieving a balance between security measures and preventive policies, because simply stopping the promoters without drying up the sources of demand or addressing the deep causes of the phenomenon may lead to the emergence of new networks that replace those that have been dismantled.
Therefore, the fight against drugs should not be measured only by the number of people arrested or the quantities seized, but rather by the ability of public policies to reduce the spread of the phenomenon and protect society, especially the youth group, from its security, social and economic effects.
