Algeria.. The attack inside a mosque reveals the escalation of neighborhood gang violence and the challenges of protecting places of worship

Algeria –The incident of an attempted assault on the imam of a mosque in the municipality of Bordj El Kiffan, after he delivered a sermon on the phenomenon of neighborhood gangs, once again highlighted the growing manifestations of violence and the expansion of the audacity of some deviants, after the violations spread to places of worship, in a scene that sparked a widespread wave of condemnation.

The Algerian security services announced the arrest of two people with criminal records, suspected of involvement in forming a neighborhood gang, spreading terror among citizens, and fighting on the public road using bladed weapons, in addition to violating the sanctity of a mosque and attempting to attack its imam.

The security intervention came after a video clip was circulated on social media, documenting a violent quarrel between the two suspects, before they headed to a mosque to attempt to attack the imam due to the contents of his sermon, which touched on the dangers of neighborhood gangs and their impact on society.

The investigations, which took place under the supervision of the competent prosecution, resulted in the identification of the two suspects and their arrest in a short time, with the seizure of six prohibited white weapons of different sizes.

This incident raises questions about the growing audacity of some gangs, and their ability to cross red lines by targeting spaces that are supposed to remain far from manifestations of violence, which reinforces calls for continued toughening of the response to this phenomenon, strengthening the protection of places of worship, and consolidating the prestige of the law in the face of all forms of crime that threaten societal security.
