BogotáColombian President-elect, Abelardo de la Speria, announced his intention to close a number of his country’s embassies in several countries, including Algeria and South Africa, immediately after officially assuming his duties on August 8, as part of a plan to restructure Colombia’s diplomatic representation and rationalize external deployment.
De la Spiria explained, in statements reported by local media, that his government will begin closing a number of embassies and consulates, stressing that this step does not mean severing diplomatic relations with the countries concerned, but rather Colombia will continue to provide consular services to its citizens through alternative diplomatic missions.
The first phase of the plan includes Colombian embassies in Algeria, South Africa, Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Hungary.
Observers believe that the decision reflects a new direction in the president-elect’s foreign policy, which is based on rearranging the priorities of international partnerships according to considerations of strategic interests, while reviewing the spread of diplomatic missions in a number of countries.
This decision comes in the context of transformations taking place in Colombian foreign policy with the arrival of the elected president to power, coinciding with indications of Rabat and Bogotá’s desire to strengthen their bilateral relations, after the two sides expressed, in exchanged telegrams, their willingness to add a new dynamism to joint cooperation.
King Mohammed VI had congratulated Abelardo de la Speria on the occasion of his election as President of Colombia, stressing the Kingdom’s readiness to work to open new horizons for partnership between the two countries, while the President-elect expressed his welcome to this initiative, stressing the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
