Tripoli –The Libyan authorities announced the closure of all livestock markets and the prohibition of transporting animals between cities and regions, as part of urgent measures to contain the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, after recording thousands of infections and the death of hundreds of heads of livestock since last June.
The head of the Animal Health Center, Muhammad Al-Oqab, explained that the toll recorded so far includes more than 3,765 infected heads, the death of 233 sheep and 44 heads of cows, in addition to 62,341 heads of animals in contact, with infections recorded in Benghazi, Al-Marj, and the Jabal Al-Akhdar regions.
The Libyan official confirmed that foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease, especially among young livestock, noting that the authorities, in coordination with the Municipal Guard and the Agricultural Police, decided to close livestock markets and prevent the movement of animals to break the chain of transmission and limit the spread of the epidemic.
Al-Oqab pointed out that control efforts face challenges, most notably the difficulty of providing vaccines before identifying the circulating viral strain, warning that the use of a mismatched vaccine may lead to additional economic losses.
He also called for providing urgent financial and logistical support to the Animal Health Center, stressing that the lack of capabilities hinders confronting the crisis, while the authorities will continue to evaluate the epidemiological situation daily to determine the possibility of easing restrictions or maintaining them until the spread of the disease is controlled.
