SetifThe tragedy of four children drowning inside an artificial water pool in the municipality of Ain El Djer, in the state of Setif, eastern Algeria, has revived the debate about the continuation of drowning incidents in unsecured water complexes, in light of the recurrence of tragedies that claim the lives of children and teenagers every summer.
The Algerian Civil Defense Services announced the recovery of the bodies of the victims, who were between 15 and 16 years old, after they drowned in an aquarium designated for aquaculture, in a tragic accident added to a series of incidents recorded in recent months.
This tragedy highlights the challenges of safety and prevention, especially with more than 50 deaths recorded by drowning in water complexes since last April, according to Civil Defense data, which raises questions about the effectiveness of awareness and control measures on sites that pose a danger to children and youth.
Observers believe that the recurrence of such incidents requires strengthening awareness campaigns, tightening procedures for securing ponds and water complexes not intended for swimming, in addition to providing safe spaces that accommodate the increasing demand for swimming during the summer.
With each incident, calls are renewed to adopt a more effective preventive approach, based on coordination between local authorities and concerned parties, with the aim of reducing the human losses that occur annually, especially among minors.
