Madrid –The recent rapprochement between Spain and Algeria did not lead to any change in Madrid’s position on the Moroccan Sahara issue, as the Spanish government continued to affirm its support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for reaching a lasting political solution to the conflict.
This came after the official visit of the Spanish Prime Minister to Algeria, whose discussions focused on issues of economic cooperation, energy and regional security, as part of the two countries’ efforts to return bilateral relations to their normal path after years of tension.
Despite the resumption of dialogue between the two sides, there have been no indications of a review of the Spanish position adopted since March 2022, which analysts considered evidence that Madrid is separating between enhancing its cooperation with Algeria and adhering to its sovereign options in the Moroccan Sahara file.
Researchers in international relations believe that the Algerian bet on changing the Spanish position through diplomatic and economic pressure did not achieve its goals, stressing that the Spanish government maintained its supportive approach to the Moroccan initiative, while continuing its economic and energy cooperation with Algeria.
Preventing journalists from asking questions during the joint press conference also aroused the attention of observers, in light of the sensitivity of the Moroccan Sahara file, which observers considered an indication of the continued disagreement between the two countries regarding this file, despite the common desire to develop bilateral relations.
Observers confirm that Madrid’s continued support for the autonomy initiative reinforces the diplomatic momentum that Morocco has achieved in recent years, at a time when the Kingdom continues to mobilize international support for its initiative as a framework for resolving the conflict under the supervision of the United Nations.
