Tetouan –The decision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, to name the regiment of officers graduating for the year 2026 from various military and paramilitary schools and institutes, carried national and sovereign messages confirming the position that the southern provinces enjoy in the royal vision, during the swearing-in ceremony that he chaired on the occasion of the twenty-seventh anniversary of Throne Day.
Choosing the name of the city of Laayoune, the capital of the southern provinces, for the graduating officers’ regiment reflects national symbolism linked to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, and embodies the Royal Institution’s keenness to consolidate the values of belonging and loyalty and link the military institution to national constants.
In his speech addressed to the new officers, His Majesty the King stressed that naming it “Al-Ayoun” comes in view of the city’s position as an integrated economic and development pole, calling on the members of the regiment to display the values of sacrifice, loyalty, national zeal, and loyalty to the slogan of the Royal Armed Forces: “God, Homeland, King.”
This choice comes in the context of the major development projects that the city of Laayoune is known for, which have made it an economic and diplomatic center in the southern regions, and a front for receiving foreign delegations and investments, within the new development model that the region is witnessing.
A number of actors and those interested in Sahrawi affairs believe that this royal initiative carries political and symbolic dimensions, and confirms the connection of the southern regions to the development and strategic project of the Kingdom. It also reflects the continuity of royal care in valuing the national symbols associated with the Moroccan Sahara.
Intervenors pointed out that naming the officers’ regiment “The Eyes” represents an extension of a royal approach that links national memory, development, and sovereignty, and enshrines the presence of the southern regions in various national stations and sovereign institutions.
