Moroccan international Nayef Akrad returned to the atmosphere of official competition, after an absence of nearly six months from the stadiums due to the consequences of injury, during the confrontation that brought together his team, Olympique Marseille, with its guest, Strasbourg, yesterday evening, in the first round of the French League, and ended with a wide victory for the Marseille team with four goals without a response.
Akrad recorded his return to the field from the gate of the Velodrome Stadium, after he entered the field in the 76th minute, replacing his colleague Conrad Egan-Riley, in his first official appearance since his long absence. It was not long after his participation that the Moroccan defender received a yellow card, and was content with about a quarter of an hour of playing in his first test after a period away from competition.
Coach Bruno Genesio chose to push Akrad during the final minutes of the confrontation, after Marseille had largely decided the match, in light of its clear superiority over Strasbourg and the wide score it had achieved before the Moroccan defender entered.
Before the start of the match, Genesio had confirmed Nayef Akrad’s readiness to participate, explaining that determining the duration of his presence on the field would remain linked to the match scenario and the extent of the need for his services, before deciding to include him in the final part of the confrontation, in a step that constituted a gradual return for the Moroccan defender to the competition atmosphere.
Akrad’s return comes at a time when his future with Olympique Marseille is still not completely decided, especially after his transfer to Real Sociedad faltered during the summer transfer period.
The player, who joined the ranks of the French team, remains facing a new stage during which he seeks to regain his full physical and technical readiness, in parallel with the anticipation of what his status with the club will become during the remainder of the transfer period.
