Forest firefighting teams are close to putting a final end to the Tazart fire in Chefchaouen province, after continuing for the fourth day in a row their operations to extinguish and cordon off burning hotspots. According to initial estimates, the fire destroyed about 15 hectares of forest cover, while intervention teams were able to besiege it from various sides, amid intense efforts to prevent any possible re-ignition.
About 380 members of the intervention teams participate in the extinguishing operations, working to extinguish hot spots and using drones equipped with advanced thermal cameras to monitor points that may constitute a source of recurrence of fire, before directing fire brigades to them and dealing with them directly.
“Kanadir” aircraft, specialized in firefighting, participated on the first day of the intervention, but the strength of the winds and thickening clouds prevented their continued use in suppression operations.
Available data indicate that the fire has entered its final stages, with it likely that all flammable spots and roots will be completely extinguished and that it will be fully controlled during Saturday. The decline in wind strength and the drop in temperatures over the past two days also contributed to facilitating the task of firefighting teams, despite the rugged terrain and the density of forest and plant cover in the area.
The Tazart fire comes a few days after a fire that broke out in the Talsemtane National Park in the Chefchaouen province, and destroyed about 65 hectares of forest area, highlighting the continued high risk of forest fires in the province and in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, which is one of the areas most vulnerable to this type of fire.
