Nouakchott –Mauritania has intensified its diplomatic and economic moves to secure international support for the national response plan for the food crisis during the year 2026, in light of the escalating climate and economic challenges hitting the Sahel region of Africa.
The capital, Nouakchott, hosted an international meeting that brought together government officials, development partners and financial institutions, devoted to discussing ways to provide the necessary funds to confront the deteriorating food conditions and support vulnerable groups affected by drought and high prices.
Mauritanian officials confirmed during the meeting that the country is facing increasing pressures due to climate disturbances and the decline in agricultural and pastoral production, in addition to the direct repercussions of the rise in global food prices.
The authorities also warned of the worsening vulnerability of food security among children and women, especially in areas most affected by drought and poor resources, noting that the 2026 plan is based on early warning mechanisms and proactive intervention to avoid the outbreak of humanitarian crises.
In addition to climate challenges, Mauritania faces pressures related to receiving refugees fleeing conflicts in the Sahel countries, especially from Mali, which increases pressure on basic resources and services.
Observers believe that the food security issue has become one of the most prominent strategic challenges in the Sahel region, in light of the overlapping economic, climate and security crises, and their direct impact on social stability and migration.
Nouakchott called on its international partners to support food and social protection programs and to promote agricultural projects capable of confronting climate change and achieving greater food sufficiency.
