Calling on the conflicting parties in Libya to calm down and an immediate ceasefire, the European Union mission, diplomatic missions and embassies of member states to Libya issued a joint statement in coordination with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, as well as the necessity of adhering to the ceasefire and following the steps of the agreed-upon security arrangements, after the recent events and military build-ups that took place in the capital, Tripoli, and its environs.
These countries added the need to preserve infrastructure and protect civilians in accordance with the requirements of international law, while the European Union renewed its commitment to the principle of holding accountable anyone who tries to threaten peace or harm civilians and national institutions, expressing their intention to support truce efforts and urging the conflicting parties to dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations.
The European Union mission also expressed a strong warning of the danger of new clashes between the conflicting parties, stressing the necessity of withdrawing the forces that were recently deployed without delay, as part of a comprehensive call to stop the escalation, maintain relations between the parties, and impose peace in the region.
At the conclusion of the statement, he urged the mission to avoid the use of force and not to escalate between the parties, expressing its call to adhere to the agreed-upon arrangements and to join in the efforts to calm the situation, adding that dialogue is the only means to consolidate stability in the region and Libya in general.
