Damascus bombings coinciding with Macron’s visit… security messages and attempts to obstruct international openness

Damascus –The bombings that rocked the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Tuesday, coinciding with the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, raised widespread questions about their timing and implications, with analysts suggesting that they carry security and political messages aimed at questioning Syria’s stability and trying to influence the course of its international openness.

Damascus witnessed the explosion of two explosive devices within a short time on Shukri al-Quwatli Street. The first exploded inside a car parked near the Ministry of Tourism building, while the second exploded inside a waste container in the same location, without affecting the French President’s visit program or the security measures surrounding it.

The bombings came at a time when Damascus was receiving the French President, in the first visit of a head of a major Western country since the political change that Syria witnessed in late 2024, a visit that was described as a turning point for restoring relations with Europe and opening the door to major investments and economic projects.

A number of analysts believe that the timing of the two bombings was not random, but rather part of attempts to make the Syrian capital appear unstable in security, and to send a message to the international community that the country is still facing security challenges despite the recent political transformations.

Security experts pointed out that the method of carrying out the operation, by detonating a first bomb followed by a second explosion, bears the hallmarks of tactics previously used in similar attacks, suggesting that extremist parties or parties harmed by the path of political openness are likely behind these operations, while emphasizing that official investigations alone are sufficient to determine responsibilities.

On the other hand, analysts considered that these bombings, despite their seriousness, did not achieve the goal they sought, as they did not lead to the cancellation or modification of Macron’s visit program, nor did they prevent the continuation of the scheduled political and economic meetings, at a time when a number of international partners continue to express their interest in participating in reconstruction and investment projects inside Syria.

Observers confirmed that building a cohesive security system will remain one of the most prominent challenges facing the Syrian authorities in the next stage, in parallel with the economic and political issues. However, the limited security incidents do not necessarily reflect a collapse in the security situation or a halt to the path of international openness.

This comes in light of Damascus’s bet on strengthening its foreign partnerships and attracting investments, in conjunction with efforts to gradually reintegrate the country into its regional and international surroundings, amid a growing conviction among a number of observers that addressing security challenges will remain an essential part of the state’s rebuilding phase.
