The Gulf states and Jordan demand an urgent UN resolution to stop Iranian attacks

New York –The Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan called on the UN Security Council to issue an urgent resolution calling for an end to what they described as “Iranian attacks” on their territories, affirming their right to self-defense and taking all legal measures to protect their sovereignty and security.

This came in a joint statement in which the seven countries stressed that the attacks attributed to Iran and its agents represent a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law, calling on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities and take additional measures if the escalation continues.

The statement stressed that countries adhere to their right to self-defense, individually or collectively, to protect their lands, citizens, commercial ships, and vital facilities, in light of the escalating security tensions in the region.

The Gulf states and Jordan welcomed the Iraqi government’s decision to confine arms to the state, expressing their support for measures aimed at reducing the activity of armed groups. They also renewed their commitment to protecting the security of international navigation in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, and to work with regional and international partners to maintain stability.

The statement also expressed full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, praising the diplomatic efforts made by Riyadh and the Sultanate of Oman to advance the path of a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.

This call comes in light of escalating regional tension, after a series of attacks targeting civilian facilities and infrastructure in a number of countries in the region, which brought the regional security issue back to the forefront of international movements.
