TripoliProtesters in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, at dawn on Saturday, escalated their protests against the deterioration of public services and the continuing crisis of power outages, after they closed a number of government headquarters using metal welding, as part of a protest campaign launched by“The Friday Market People’s Movement”.
The movement documented, through posts on social media, the closure of official headquarters, includingHousing and Utilities Projects Implementation Agency, andForeign Investment Building of the Audit Bureau, andLibya-Africa portfolio for foreign investment, in addition toTripoli Projects OfficeAffiliated with the Administrative Centers Development Authority.
This escalation comes after the movement announced its entry intoPeaceful civil disobedienceStarting on Friday, with protests organized in Martyrs’ Square, to demand the improvement of basic services and an end to the electricity crisis, in addition to calling for reform of the political and service conditions in the country.
Protest organizers stressed that civil disobedience remains peaceful and does not aim to block roads or damage public or private property, stressing that the movements aim to communicate citizens’ demands and pressure to take urgent measures to address the worsening crises.
Libya has recently witnessed an escalation in popular anger due to repeated power outages and a decline in the level of services, which has prompted protesters to hold the authorities and existing political bodies responsible for the deterioration of living conditions, and to demand urgent reforms.
