My Press – Maghreb Affairs |The economic and media arena in Algeria is witnessing an escalating debate about the country’s financial balances in light of the decline in oil and gas prices in international markets, coinciding with the increasing cost of diplomatic options that have led to a chill in relations with a number of regional and international partners.
Challenges of the fiscal deficit and declining purchasing power
Consistent economic reports indicate that excessive reliance on fuel revenues, which represent more than 90% of Algerian export revenues, places the public budget under severe structural pressures:
- Erosion of purchasing power:The prices of basic foodstuffs, meat and spare parts continue to rise as a result of strict restrictions imposed on imports and the decline in the value of the dinar in the parallel market.
- The cost of regional tensions:Analysts believe that the closure of borders and airspace and the severing of trade relations in the Maghreb and the Sahel deprived the Algerian economy of natural markets and vital logistical outlets.
- The latest international position:The recent UN Security Council resolutions that established the validity and credibility of the Moroccan autonomy initiative constituted a turning point that prompted reasonable voices to question the feasibility of draining the country’s capabilities in an artificial conflict.
Maghreb economists confirm that building an integrated economic bloc based on cooperation and good neighborliness remains the only option to achieve sustainable development for the peoples of the region.
