Sirte –On Sunday, the city of Sirte hosted a meeting of the Joint Military Committee (5+5), which includes military leaders from eastern and western Libya, in a new step aimed at advancing the path of unifying the military institution, amid a welcome from the Libyan Presidential Council and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
The meeting was attended by the Acting Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Salah al-Din al-Namroush, and the Chief of Staff of the General Command, Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, along with the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, Stephanie Khoury, members of the Joint Military Committee, and a number of military leaders.
The Libyan Presidential Council welcomed the holding of the meeting, considering that it represents an important step to strengthen military dialogue and complete efforts aimed at unifying the military institution, as it is an essential pillar for consolidating security and stability and unifying state institutions.
For its part, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya described the meeting as an important step to build confidence between the Libyan parties, stressing its continued support for the military track under Libyan leadership and ownership, through continuing facilitation and international coordination efforts.
Saddam Haftar, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Libyan Forces, also welcomed the holding of the meeting, stressing that unifying the military institution on national and professional foundations represents a major goal to enhance the country’s security and protect its sovereignty, praising the support provided by the United States, through the American Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM), along with the United Nations mission.

The Libyans are counting on the success of this path to create the necessary conditions for holding the postponed elections and ending the political and institutional division that the country has been witnessing for years.
