The Iranian nuclear program returns to the forefront…a struggle over pressure cards threatens the chances of an agreement with Washington

Washington/Tehran – The Iranian nuclear file has returned to the forefront of international events again, in light of the escalation of tension between the United States and Iran, amid renewed disagreements regarding the stockpile of enriched uranium and the mechanisms for inspection and oversight of the Iranian nuclear program.

An American official confirmed today that Washington will not move forward with any new agreement with Tehran unless it obtains what he described as “Iranian nuclear dust,” in reference to the American administration’s strictness regarding the fate of Iranian nuclear materials and guarantees to limit its nuclear capabilities.

This position comes at a time when relations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency are witnessing a state of tension, following previous disagreements regarding inspections and the level of Tehran’s cooperation with the agency, which further complicates the course of negotiations and places the future of any new nuclear agreement before major challenges.

Observers believe that the enriched uranium issue and international monitoring mechanisms have become the most prominent points of disagreement between the two parties, at a time when Washington is seeking to impose more stringent guarantees, while Tehran adheres to its right to its nuclear program and rejects what it considers political pressures that go beyond international obligations.

These developments come in light of the continuation of diplomatic contacts between the two sides, but the divergence of positions on fundamental issues makes the chances of reaching a comprehensive agreement dependent on the extent of the two parties’ ability to overcome differences related to the nuclear program and international oversight mechanisms.
