Water crisis in Mauritania.. Authorities rely on tankers to secure water supply in Silbabi

Silbaby-The authorities of the state of Kedi Maga, in southern Mauritania, announced the adoption of an urgent plan to supply the residents of the city of Silbabi with potable water via tankers, in light of the decline in the water station’s production due to the silt phenomenon that seasonally affects the Kouri station, according to statements by the governor of the state, Dahmane Ould Birouk.

The governor explained, in an interview with the official Mauritanian agency, that the authorities took urgent measures to ensure the continuity of water supply, including distributing water by tankers, until the effects of silt that led to a decrease in the production of the Kouri station were overcome.

This measure comes after media reports highlighted the recorded shortage of drinking water in the city of Silbaby and a number of cities and villages in Kedi Maga state, in light of the increasing demand during the current period.

In the same context, the head of the National Water Company SNDE center in the city of Silbaby, Bakkar Ahmeida, confirmed that water production has declined to less than 1,000 cubic meters per day, while the city’s needs exceed 8,000 cubic meters per day.

The official added that the decline in production is due to the silt crisis that greatly affected the river station, as its production capacity decreased from about 150 cubic meters per hour to about 45 cubic meters per hour, after it had been supplying the city with about 3,000 cubic meters per day.

The authorities confirmed that efforts are continuing to increase the production capacity of water stations and restore the normal pace of supply, until the effects of the seasonal phenomenon end.
