Thirst exhausts the villages of Kidi Maga. Minor girls and women make the arduous journey every day to fetch water

Silbabi – Residents of a number of villages in Kedi Magha state in southern Mauritania continue to suffer from the water scarcity crisis, as women and girls, including minors, are forced to travel daily distances and extract water from deep wells using traditional means to secure their families’ needs.

In the village of “Inkhilah 1” in the municipality of Ar, about 45 kilometers from the city of Silbaby, the journey to search for water turns into an arduous task that begins at a well more than 35 meters deep, where women rely on buckets and physical strength to extract water, before transporting it by donkey carts or other primitive means.

The testimonies of village residents confirm that obtaining water is not linked to a specific time, as trips are repeated whenever the available quantities run out, while suffering increases during the summer as the water level decreases and the well dries up, which sometimes forces people to go to neighboring villages in search of safe drinking water.

Women from the village explained that this reality caused recurring health problems, most notably joint pain and stress resulting from drawing water from great depths on a daily basis, demanding the provision of a water network or a public tap to end years of daily hardship.

Residents also pointed out that neighboring villages have benefited from projects to supply them with water, while their village is still waiting for an intervention to put an end to the thirst crisis that affects the daily lives of residents.

The suffering is not limited to water only, as some residents confirmed that the weak grazing season and the absence of support allocated to providing fodder have exacerbated the difficult living conditions, with the population relying mainly on raising livestock.

The water crisis remains one of the most prominent challenges facing many villages and population centers in Kedi Maga state, as residents demand the acceleration of the implementation of projects that guarantee their basic right of access to safe and sustainable drinking water.
