BamakoThe transitional government in Mali announced, on Friday, the return of its ambassador to Algeria to his workplace in the capital, Algiers, in a move that reflects a noticeable improvement in bilateral relations after a period of diplomatic tension between the two countries.
The Malian government explained, in an official statement, that the decision comes as part of a series of measures aimed at revitalizing relations of cooperation and friendship with Algeria, and resuming diplomatic work normally.
In the same context, Bamako decided to reopen its airspace to all civilian and military flights coming from or heading to Algeria, hours after Algeria announced the complete opening of its airspace to Malian air traffic, in implementation of the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
This is the first step towards restoring air traffic between the two countries after more than 14 months of cessation, and is an indication of the desire of both parties to overcome previous differences.
These developments also come after Algeria’s decision to return its ambassador to Mali, Kamel Ratib, to his post in Bamako, after he had been summoned for consultations in April 2025 against the backdrop of the diplomatic crisis.
Observers believe that the return of the ambassadors and the opening of the two airspaces constitute the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between Algeria and Mali, especially in the security, economic and diplomatic files, in a way that enhances joint coordination and serves the stability of the Sahel region.
