SportsWorld football entered an unprecedented stage of tension, after the European Football Association (UEFA) announced that the 55 member associations voted unanimously to boycott the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) tournaments, most notably the World Cup, if FIFA President Gianni Infantino proceeds with his project to establish a new commercial company and open part of its ownership to private investors.
This position comes after an emergency meeting held by UEFA, during which it considered that the World Cup represents a global sporting heritage that should not be turned into an investment asset or subjected to the logic of private ownership, stressing its categorical rejection of the plan to sell shares of the commercial rights to the tournament.
According to circulating data, the International Federation proposes to establish a new company bearing the nameFIFA Forward EnterpriseIt will manage commercial activities and major tournaments, with the possibility of offering a minority stake to investors, within the framework of a project aimed at expanding football development resources globally, with FIFA confirming that it retains full control over sporting and organizational decisions.
The European Union believes that the project lacks transparency, and raises concerns about the future of the game’s management, considering that linking national federations with financial incentives to support the plan raises questions about decision-making mechanisms within the international football system.
On the other hand, FIFA confirms that the initiative aims to raise funding for football development programs around the world to more than $10 billion in the coming years, while keeping all governance and tournament powers in the hands of the International Federation.
This dispute is considered one of the biggest crises that world football has witnessed in recent years, amid anticipation of the positions of the rest of the continental federations and whether they will join the European position or continue to support the project, which needs the approval of the member federations of FIFA before it is officially approved.
