Nouakchott –The US State Department announced the cessation of routine visa services at its embassy in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, starting on August 1, 2026, as part of a decision that includes 24 US diplomatic missions in Africa, with the processing of visa applications being transferred to designated regional centers.
The US State Department explained that the decision includes tourist, business, labor, and immigration visas, stressing that its goal is to strengthen security screening procedures, reduce government costs, and unify mechanisms for processing visa applications at the level of a number of diplomatic missions on the continent.
The Ministry confirmed that this measure does not mean the closure of the US Embassy in Nouakchott or the consulates included in the decision, nor will it affect the validity of valid US visas for their holders.
She added that applicants for visas from Mauritania and the countries concerned will have to go to regional centers that will continue to provide these services, noting that American diplomatic missions in cities such as Dakar, Accra, Abidjan, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Johannesburg will receive visa applications according to the new arrangements.
This decision comes within the framework of a comprehensive review of the mechanisms for providing US consular services in a number of African countries, in line with the new policy of the US Department of State in the field of managing visa services.
