Sofia –On Wednesday, the Bulgarian Parliament approved a government request to allow the temporary stationing of American aircraft to refuel at the Bezmer military base, despite warnings from Iran that this step might make Bulgaria a partner in any possible military operations.
The decision was supported by 136 deputies, against 13 opposition, while two deputies abstained from voting, allowing the deployment of eight American KC-135 aircraft, along with about 250 American military personnel, during the period extending from July 24 to the beginning of next October.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed that his country will not host any offensive weapons systems, stressing that the temporary stationing of aircraft does not make Bulgaria a party to any military operations, but rather falls within the framework of the agreement on the joint use of military facilities between the two countries.
On the other hand, the plan raised local objections, as the mayors of five cities near the Bezemer base filed complaints expressing security concerns related to hosting American forces.
On Tuesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry warned against allowing the United States to use Bulgarian territory in any military operations against Iran, considering that such a step might make Sofia “a partner in aggression and violation of international law.”
