GhanaDuring the past few hours, the Ghanaian capital, Accra, witnessed widespread flooding following heavy rains, which caused the submergence of a large number of streets and residential neighborhoods, paralyzing movement and forcing residents to swim to cross roads that turned into waterways.
Video clips and pictures circulated showed the extent of the damage caused by the floods, as water submerged vehicles and main roads, while a number of citizens were forced to wade through the water or swim to reach their homes or workplaces, in scenes that reflect the difficult conditions inside the capital.
The floods disrupted traffic after many axes became impassable, while water surrounded residential neighborhoods and commercial areas, amid fears of water levels rising if the rains continued during the coming hours.
The Ghanaian authorities are following developments in the field situation, while assessments of the extent of losses and damage caused by the rains are continuing, in addition to monitoring the most affected areas in anticipation of any new developments.
Accra frequently experiences seasonal floods during rainy periods, but the recent intensity of precipitation has brought to the fore the challenges of infrastructure and water drainage networks, which face difficulties in absorbing large amounts of rain.
