صحافة بلادي — The legislative and political arena in Tunisia is witnessing intense parliamentary discussions in the Assembly of People’s Representatives, led by the opening of the file to amend Decree No. 54 related to combating crimes related to information and communication systems, in addition to the initiation of a study of the financial and economic balances of the state budget project.
A legislative initiative to amend Chapter 24 of Decree 54 in Tunisia
65 representatives in the Tunisian Parliament announced the submission of an official legislative initiative aimed at revising a number of chapters of Decree 54 issued in September 2022, especially Chapter 24 of it, which sparked widespread human rights and media controversy in Tunisian journalistic and political circles.
The amendments proposed by the representatives aim to scrutinize the legal concepts related to disseminating news over communication networks, and to achieve a balance between combating cybercrimes and protecting freedom of expression and professional journalistic work in accordance with the requirements of the Tunisian Constitution and human rights standards.
Economic and social stakes in discussing the Tunisian state budget
In parallel with the legislative agenda, the Tunisian Parliament is discussing the fiscal and social measures contained in the new draft finance law, amid government efforts to reduce the budget deficit, secure financing for support funds and public services, and stimulate investment in the phosphate, agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy sectors, in a way that enhances the resilience of the Tunisian economy in light of the current regional and international challenges.
