Monastir –On Tuesday, the state of Monastir witnessed a protest organized by a number of residents denouncing the repeated interruptions of drinking water, coinciding with a heat wave in the country, demanding that the authorities find urgent solutions to ensure regular water supply.
Protesters gathered in front of the regional headquarters of the National Water Exploitation and Distribution Company and the state headquarters, protesting against the continued water outages since the beginning of last June, stressing that the situation has caused a shortage of drinking water and environmental damage related to public hygiene.
The protesters pointed out that the company did not adhere to its program to limit water cuts during the night hours, considering that the continued interruptions during the daytime periods affect citizens’ right to obtain water.
These protests come at a time when Tunisia is experiencing a heat wave and a rise in electricity consumption, which has led to frequent power outages that have in turn affected the pumping of water through distribution networks, especially in rural areas.
The repercussions of the crisis also extended to various economic sectors, including poultry and cattle raising and marine fishing, as professionals complained of losses resulting from power outages and high production costs.
The crisis sparked a debate within the Tunisian Parliament, as a number of representatives criticized the absence of government representatives from a session devoted to discussing the recurring water and electricity outages, demanding clarification of the causes of the crisis and the measures taken to address it.
