The United States imposes new sanctions on oil tankers and companies linked to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz

WashingtonThe United States announced the imposition of a new package of sanctions on eight oil tankers and ten companies linked to Iran, as part of its efforts to increase pressure on Iranian energy exports and the shipping and maritime insurance networks associated with them.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury explained that the sanctions targeted two Iranian companies that Washington accuses of participating in a maritime insurance system supported by the Revolutionary Guard, in addition to eight companies that own or manage tankers that transported Iranian crude oil and petroleum products, including six entities based in China and Hong Kong.

According to the US Treasury Department, the targeted tankers have transported millions of barrels of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products since 2022, and China was the main destination for these shipments, in addition to exporting some petroleum products to the UAE.

The sanctions also included the Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and Hormuz Safe Marine Services, which Washington accuses of managing an insurance system for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, imposing insurance policies approved by the Revolutionary Guard on commercial ships, in addition to accepting payments in Bitcoin and other digital assets.

These measures come after the escalation of tension between Washington and Tehran, and in light of the continued US sanctions on the Iranian energy sector, in conjunction with American warnings that financial institutions and foreign companies that deal with listed entities or ships may be exposed to secondary sanctions.

Despite these sanctions, the general license issued by OFAC last June remains valid until August 21, 2026, temporarily allowing some transactions related to the production, transportation, and sale of Iranian oil and petrochemical products under specific conditions.
