Washington –US President Donald Trump pledged, on Tuesday, to continue supporting Lebanon and providing aid to it, while receiving Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House, while the latter stressed that achieving peace and ending the state of hostility with Israel represent a priority for restoring stability in the country.
Trump said that Lebanon has suffered from accumulated crises for years, expressing the United States’ commitment to helping Beirut, and praising the level of bilateral relations between the two countries.
For his part, the Lebanese President stressed that his country looks forward to ending the state of hostility with Israel permanently, considering that the return of stability to Lebanon has become an achievable goal, despite the existing security and political challenges.
Aoun revealed that he asked the American administration to continue providing political and military support to the Lebanese army, praising its role in maintaining security and stability. He also indicated that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is making efforts to contain the escalation in southern Lebanon.
The meeting also touched on the Hezbollah file, as Trump indicated that there are regional movements related to this file, while the Lebanese president clings to the option of strengthening the state’s authority and its security institutions.
This meeting comes after a previous meeting between Aoun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which he called on Washington to pressure Israel to complete the withdrawal from southern Lebanon in accordance with the agreement announced on June 26, which aims to consolidate the cessation of hostilities and create conditions for stability in the region.
The visit coincided with the Lebanese army beginning to deploy in some areas from which Israeli forces had withdrawn, at a time when the security situation in the south of the country is still tense, amid continuing Israeli warnings regarding military movements in the region.
