The Lebanese-Israeli agreement reveals the conflict between Vance and Rubio within the Trump administration

WashingtonA recent political analysis revealed that the Lebanese-Israeli agreement, sponsored by the United States, is not limited to being a diplomatic step in the Middle East, but also reflects an escalating struggle for influence within the administration of US President Donald Trump, between Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at a time when the two Republican parties are preparing for the expected presidential battle in 2028.

The analysis believes that the agreement came in the context of competition between two currents within the Republican Party. The first is led by J.D. Vance, who advocates reducing US military interventions and focusing on internal files, and the second is represented by Marco Rubio, who belongs to the traditional Republican movement that supports the policy of pressure on opponents and strengthening the alliance with Israel.

According to the analysis, this discrepancy clearly appeared in the distribution of roles within the American administration, as Vance led the memorandum of understanding negotiations with Iran, while Rubio supervised the Lebanese-Israeli agreement, in two tracks that reflect two different visions of American policy in the region.

The analysis indicates that the memorandum of understanding with Iran is based on reducing regional escalation and stopping the war in exchange for mutual commitments, while the Lebanese-Israeli agreement links any Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon to the process of disarming Hezbollah, which Tehran considers outside the framework of the understandings it concluded with Washington.

The report confirms that President Trump seeks to achieve a political balance between the two competing wings within the Republican Party, by giving each party space to manage strategic files, in order to preserve the party’s unity before the midterm congressional elections, scheduled for November 2026.

In this context, Trump assigned Vance the task of negotiating with Iran and promoting the agreement, while Rubio was assigned to manage the relationship with Israel and the Gulf states, where he led meetings that confirmed Washington’s continued commitment to the security of the region, while emphasizing that Iran was considered a major source of instability.

The analysis links the future of this balance to the results of the two agreements, considering that the success of the truce with Iran may strengthen Vance’s position within the Republican Party, while the success of the Lebanese-Israeli agreement may give Rubio an advantage in the race to run for the US presidency.

The report concludes that the American administration may continue to adopt a policy of “fragile balance” between the two agreements, by postponing the resolution of controversial issues and avoiding full bias towards either party, until internal electoral dues are passed, while keeping the door open to new understandings in the Middle East
