Algeria –The case of the arrest of a woman known on social media as “Sabrina,” after she was accused of impersonating a doctor and committing dozens of fraudulent acts, has reopened the debate about the effectiveness of mechanisms for verifying professional identity, given her ability to gain the trust of her victims and move between several states before her overthrow.
According to data announced by the National Gendarmerie, the suspect was arrested in the city of El-Afroun, Blida Province, following a complaint filed by a taxi driver, before investigations revealed that she is being investigated in a number of cases, and that she is involved in 29 cases, including 15 fraud and 10 theft cases, in addition to judicial rulings ranging from one to three years in prison, including 18 rulings in absentia.
Data indicate that the suspect was relying on impersonating the character of a doctor to lure victims and make them believe in her profession, exploiting the trust that society gives to this capacity, before carrying out the fraudulent operations. These are facts that were also documented by surveillance camera recordings and video clips that spread widely across social media platforms.
Although the success of the security services in arresting the suspect reflects the effectiveness of the security work after collecting evidence and tracking her movements, the case, on the other hand, raises questions about how its activity continues across different states, and the adequacy of mechanisms for verifying professional identities, especially when it comes to sensitive characteristics such as medical professions that are linked to the trust of citizens.
Observers believe that the spread of such cases reflects the need to enhance societal awareness not to deal with anyone who claims a professional capacity without verifying his identity, in addition to developing means of oversight and coordination between competent institutions to limit the exploitation of job qualities in fraudulent operations.
Pending the completion of investigations and the suspect being brought to justice, the case remains a model that re-raises the problem of exploiting public trust in carrying out crimes, and stresses the importance of combining security vigilance and community awareness to limit the recurrence of such incidents.
