Ramadan on the price tin in Libya: Dates for one dinar ignite a confrontation between the logic of solidarity and market calculations

Tripoli – February 16, 2026

An initiative was launched inLibyaDates were sold at a price of one dinar per kilogram before the month of Ramadan, which sparked a wide debate about their economic and social repercussions.

The initiative was announced by the businessmanIsmail Al-ShtewiIt includes offering more than 500,000 kilograms of dates in the markets of several cities, with the aim of alleviating the living burdens on citizens in light of the current economic conditions.

However, the move was met with criticism from some merchants and farmers who considered that marketing large quantities at low prices might negatively affect the local market, especially since the month of Ramadan represents the peak selling season for date producers who depend on it to cover production costs and achieve a profit margin.

On the other hand, supporters of the initiative believe that it has a social nature that is limited in time, and that the quantity offered may be consumed quickly during the first days of Ramadan, given the high demand, which makes it a temporary support for families without a long-term impact on the market.

Libya is one of the countries that produces dates, especially in the southern and oasis regions, where palm cultivation constitutes a major resource for thousands of farmers, while the month of Ramadan remains the most important period in the commercial cycle for this sector.
