Rabat –The Government Council, held today, Thursday, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, approved a draft decree to launch a new generation of biometric passport, within the framework of modernizing the travel documents system and enhancing levels of protection and security in accordance with the latest international standards.
This concerns draft Decree No.2.26.551, which aims to amend and supplement Decree No.2.08.310Issued in 2008, regulating the biometric passport, on the proposal of the Minister of Interior, Abdel Wafi Laftit.
The official government spokesman, Mustafa Paytas, explained that the project comes within the Kingdom’s strategy aimed at developing secure administrative documents, by adopting a new passport that includes advanced technical and security features to reduce forgery and illicit use.
He added that the new design will reflect the Moroccan identity with its various civilizational and cultural components, while incorporating the latest internationally approved technologies in the field of securing travel documents and protecting personal data.
Paytas stressed that the decree includes transitional requirements that ensure the continuation of work with current biometric passports until the completion of production and distribution of the new generation, ensuring the continuity of services and that citizens holding valid passports are not affected.
This project comes in the context of Morocco’s continued modernization of its official documents and enhancing their reliability, keeping pace with global technological developments and enhancing the position of the Moroccan passport as a safe and internationally recognized travel document.
