Libya resolves the election file.. Signing the “4+4 Committee” agreement in Tunisia on Tuesday

Tunisia –The “4+4” committee in Libya announced that the final signing of the agreement related to the restructuring of the High National Elections Commission and the legal framework regulating the electoral process will take place next Tuesday in the Tunisian capital, in a new step towards ending the political stalemate that the country is witnessing.

Committee member, Abdul Jalil Al-Shawish, explained that the signing ceremony will include the adoption of the Commission’s committee’s outputs and the legal rules regulating the elections, after a series of consultations between various Libyan parties.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced, late last April, that the small team known as the “4+4 Committee”, during its meeting in the Italian capital, Rome, had reached an agreement regarding the restructuring of the Council of the High National Elections Commission.

The recommendations stipulate that the Public Prosecutor shall nominate a judge known for his competence, integrity, and impartiality to head the Commission, provided that he is appointed in accordance with applicable laws, in addition to selecting members representing the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State.

The “4+4” committee includes representatives of the House of Representatives, the Supreme Council of State, and the Government of National Unity, in addition to representatives of the General Command of the Armed Forces, as part of international efforts to unify institutions and create conditions for holding elections.

This step comes in light of the continuing political and institutional division that Libya has experienced since 2014, amid hopes that the agreement will contribute to advancing the electoral process and restoring stability to the country.
