Silbaby –Today, Wednesday, dozens of residents went out in a protest in the city of Silbabi, the capital of Kedi Magha state in southern Mauritania, to demand the provision of safe drinking water, against the backdrop of the worsening thirst crisis that the city is witnessing in light of the decline in water production to unprecedented levels.
The protesters raised slogans calling on the authorities to intervene immediately to end the water crisis, criticizing what they described as the delay in measures to alleviate the suffering of the population and develop sustainable solutions to prevent the recurrence of the crisis.
These protests come after the water company’s production fell to less than 1,000 cubic meters per day, while the daily needs of the city of Silbaby are estimated at about 8,000 cubic meters, causing widespread disruptions in the supply of potable water.
According to circulating data, the company had previously relied on a distribution system that rotated between neighborhoods to manage the shortage, but the high percentage of silt in the river water led to a sharp decline in production, with the crisis affecting various neighborhoods of the city.
In an attempt to contain the situation, the governor of Kedi Magha state, Dahmane Ould Birok, summoned representatives of the protesters to hold a meeting and discuss ways to address the crisis and listen to their demands.
These developments come amid increasing demands to find sustainable solutions to enhance water infrastructure and ensure that the city’s residents are provided with drinking water on a regular basis.
