July 14 and 18The Commission, along with the Mauritanian authorities and its partners, participated in implementing three safe landing operations, which resulted in the rescue of387 peopleIn the last operation, rescue teams were able to recover38 survivorsAmong them are two children who lost all their family members at sea.It is with deep sadness and concern that we receive reports indicating that 144 people have died or are missing off the coast of Mauritania.

July 21, 2026The Commission confirmed that the sea route linking the western coast of Africa with the Canary Islands is considered one of the deadliest migration routes in the world, due to the length of the journey, the fluctuations in weather conditions, the use of dilapidated and overcrowded boats, in addition to the limited opportunities for timely rescue.
The United Nations called for strengthening legal pathways for migration, by expanding resettlement programs, job opportunities and education, to reduce thousands of people resorting to dangerous sea journeys that repeatedly claim the lives of migrants.
Mauritania continues to play a pivotal role in rescue operations on the Atlantic coast, having received
