Tragedy off Mauritania.. The United Nations announces the death or loss of 144 migrants on their way to Europe

Nouakchott– The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that144 immigrantsThey died or went missing following a series of tragic maritime accidents off the coast of Mauritania last week while trying to reach the Spanish Canary Islands.

The UNHCR explained that the migrants, including refugees, were on a boat that departed fromGambiaThey remained stuck in the sea for a period of time 25 daysBefore tragedy struck, on one of the most dangerous voyages across the Atlantic.During the period between

July 14 and 18The Commission, along with the Mauritanian authorities and its partners, participated in implementing three safe landing operations, which resulted in the rescue of387 peopleIn the last operation, rescue teams were able to recover38 survivorsAmong them are two children who lost all their family members at sea.It is with deep sadness and concern that we receive reports indicating that 144 people have died or are missing off the coast of Mauritania.

The United Nations called for strengthening legal pathways for migration, by expanding resettlement programs, job opportunities and education, to reduce thousands of people resorting to dangerous sea journeys that repeatedly claim the lives of migrants.
