Nouakchott –LNG production in Mauritania has recorded record levels since the beginning of 2026, driven by the strong performance of the “Turtle Ahmeem Al-Kabir” field project, which strengthens the country’s position on the map of global gas exporters in the coming years.
According to recent data, the production of the first phase exceeded the nominal capacity of the floating liquefaction unit, which amounts to about 2.5 million tons annually, with expectations that the total capacity will rise to 10 million tons annually upon completion of all stages of the project.
During the first quarter of 2026, the average production reached about 2.85 million tons annually, exceeding the design capacity, at a time when approximately 9 and a half shipments of liquefied gas were shipped, with total annual exports expected to stabilize between 32 and 36 shipments.
Mauritanian gas exports also recorded a record increase of more than 1,500% on an annual basis, reaching about 703 thousand tons during the first three months of the year, compared to only 42 thousand tons during the same period in 2025, in an indication of the acceleration of the pace of production and export.
The “Great Ahmeem Turtle” project, jointly with Senegal, is one of the largest energy projects in the region, led by the British company BP along with international partners, with expectations of ensuring the continuity of production for more than 20 years, based on reserves estimated at about 15 trillion cubic feet of gas.
Mauritania is betting on this project to enhance its presence in the global gas market, especially in light of the diversity of export destinations and high international demand, which may make it a major player in securing supplies during the next stage.
