A meeting in Nouakchott brings the Sahara issue back to the forefront of regional movements

Nouakchott – During the past few days, the Mauritanian presidential palace hosted a meeting that brought together President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani with a delegation from the Polisario Front, in a move that comes within a diplomatic context that is witnessing accelerating movement regarding the regional conflict over the Sahara. The Mauritanian presidency did not respond with an official statement clarifying the nature of the talks or their axes.

This development comes in an international context characterized by the resumption of political consultations under the supervision of the United Nations, with the support of the United States of America, following the issuance of Security Council Resolution No. 2797 in October 2025, which renewed the call to push towards an agreed-upon political solution.

In its official positions, Nouakchott affirms its commitment to what it describes as “positive neutrality” towards the conflict, while emphasizing the importance of regional stability and avoiding any tensions that may be reflected in the Sahel region and the Maghreb region.

Observers believe that receiving the Polisario delegation falls within the framework of the normal movements undertaken by the parties concerned with the file, especially in light of the current diplomatic dynamic, without necessarily meaning a shift in the declared Mauritanian position.

According to political readings, the acceleration of international consultations may place neighboring countries facing new entitlements, whether on the security or social level, if tangible progress is recorded in the settlement process.

Observers also point out that the current stage is characterized by focusing efforts on developing a political solution that guarantees stability and development in the region, in light of increasing regional challenges, especially in the Sahel region.

The recent meeting in Nouakchott remains part of the dynamic diplomatic scene, awaiting what the international consultations will lead to during the coming period.
