Rabat– AgreedAfrican Development BankToday, Thursday, to grant Morocco a loan of205 million euros(About234 million dollars) to support the project to expand the high-speed rail network, within the framework of strengthening the transport infrastructure in preparation for hosting the finalsWorld Cup 2030In partnership with Spain and Portugal.
The bank explained, in a statement, that the financing aims to enhance the capacity and operational performance of the railway line linkingKenitra and Marrakesh, which is considered one of the most vital transportation hubs in the Kingdom, due to the volume of passenger and goods traffic it witnesses.
This loan comes within a broader investment program launched by Morocco to develop the railway transport sector, with investments of approximately96 billion dirhams(about9.6 billion dollars), including the completion of a high-speed line extending over a distance430 kilometersStarting from Kenitra, passing through Rabat and Casablanca, reaching the city of Marrakesh.
According to official data, the operational speed of the new line will be320 kilometers per hourThe project also includes the completion of a three-kilometre-long tunnel under the city of Rabat, and a direct link to the Grand Stadium in Benslimane and Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, thus enhancing the readiness of the infrastructure to receive major sporting events.
It is expected that the project will contribute to reducing travel time betweenTangier and MarrakeshTo about2 hours and 40 minutesInstead of five hours, the travel time betweenwill be reduced Rabat and Mohammed V AirportTo about35 minutes.
