Occupied CeutaThe Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, confirmed on Saturday that security cooperation between Morocco and Spain was a decisive factor in restoring stability to the occupied city of Ceuta within less than 48 hours of the wave of irregular migration that the city witnessed, stressing that the Kingdom is a “reliable partner” in managing security and immigration issues.
Marlaska explained, during a press conference held in the city of Ceuta, that close coordination between Rabat and Madrid enabled the authorities to quickly contain the situation, contributed to reducing attempts at irregular migration and dismantling human smuggling networks that exploit migrants.
In the same context, the Spanish Minister of the Interior categorically denied the existence of any intelligence report indicating Morocco’s involvement or prior knowledge of the events that took place in the city, in response to questions about whether the Spanish security services had warned of these developments.
The Spanish official’s statements come at a time when Ceuta is witnessing security tension following calls by right-wing extremist groups to organize protests against the backdrop of the migration crisis, amid fears that these events will be exploited to fuel anti-Moroccan rhetoric.
On the other hand, a number of city residents came out to express their rejection of these calls, stressing their commitment to coexistence and social peace, while the Spanish authorities strengthened their security deployment to prevent any confrontations.
The statements of the Spanish Minister of the Interior reflect the continuation of Madrid’s official position in support of cooperation with Rabat on security and immigration issues, despite the internal political controversy that accompanied the recent events in Ceuta.
