Tunisia –A video clip circulating on social media sparked a widespread wave of discontent in Tunisia, after it documented a scene from a wedding ceremony in which a performance group appeared performing folkloric performances using horses, before one of the horses was dropped to the ground and danced on top of it, in an incident that sparked widespread criticism and calls for those responsible to be held accountable.
The video shows a horse lying on the ground, while one of the band members mounted his stomach and continued dancing amidst the music playing and the applause of a number of attendees. What activists and specialized associations considered clear animal abuse and subjecting it to mistreatment for the sake of entertainment.
In this context, the Tunisian Society for the Protection of Animals condemned the incident, considering in a statement that using a horse in this way harms its health and dignity, and reflects the need to tighten laws related to protecting animals and preventing various forms of abuse to which they may be exposed.
For its part, Al-Rahma Society for the Protection of Animals announced its intention to file a lawsuit over the incident, stressing that the circulating video clips require opening an investigation and taking the necessary legal measures against those involved.
In media statements, the president of the association, Jamila Ammar, considered that such shows do not have any entertainment value, questioning the justification for exposing a horse to stress and burdening it beyond its capacity during a festive occasion. She also called for reviewing the legal framework regulating the protection of animals in order to keep pace with developments and ensure stricter penalties.
The incident brought back to the forefront a similar incident that Tunisia witnessed in September 2025, when a video clip showed a bride dancing in high heels on the belly of a horse. This is a case that ended with the owner of the show band and his assistant being imprisoned for five days on charges of mistreatment of an animal.
Horses are part of the ceremonial heritage in a number of Tunisian regions, where they are used in some wedding ceremonies and folkloric performances. However, the recent incident has reopened the debate about the limits of the use of animals in recreational activities and the necessity of ensuring their safety and respecting their rights.
