Algeria –The overturning accident of a bus transporting passengers in the state of Boumerdes, which claimed the lives of 27 people and injured 39 others, has reignited the debate about the reality of road safety in Algeria, in light of the recurrence of fatal accidents despite repeated official promises to tighten control and improve infrastructure.
The accident occurred on National Road No. 24 in the Karma area, after the bus deviated and fell down a slope, while the authorities launched an investigation to determine the causes and responsibilities.
Following the tragedy, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared a three-day national mourning, vowing to hold those responsible for the accident accountable and describing those causing traffic accidents as “road criminals.” However, these statements brought to the fore repeated questions about the feasibility of the measures taken, at a time when traffic accidents still claim hundreds of lives annually.
Observers believe that the recurrence of traffic disasters reflects challenges that go beyond drivers’ mistakes, to include the conditions of some roads, the extent of compliance with safety standards, and mechanisms for monitoring public transportation, in addition to the effectiveness of implementing deterrent laws.
The Boumerdes accident comes after a series of tragic accidents that Algeria witnessed during the past months, which reinforces calls to move from circumstantial reactions after each tragedy to adopting sustainable reforms to reduce the loss of lives on the roads.
