Tunisia –On Tuesday, a number of members of the Tunisian People’s Assembly submitted an official petition demanding that an urgent public session be held to hold the Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy accountable, against the backdrop of repeated power outages in several regions of the country, and the resulting disturbances that affected the daily lives of citizens and affected the activity of economic institutions, especially in light of the high heat wave.
In the petition submitted to the Central Control Office in Parliament, the representatives explained that the recurring outages have raised increasing concerns about the ability of the electricity system to meet demand during the summer, calling for clarifications about the actual causes of the crisis and the extent of the readiness of the production, transmission and distribution networks to face peak periods.
The signatories of the petition also called for revealing the reality of the investments allocated to modernizing and maintaining the electrical infrastructure, and the urgent measures that the government intends to take to avoid the recurrence of these disturbances in the future, and to ensure the stability of energy supply.
The representatives called on the government to adopt more transparency in informing public opinion of the plans to address the crisis, stressing at the same time their support for the employees and executives of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company, and their refusal to hold them responsible for imbalances that they believe are related to public policies and the level of investment in this vital sector.
