Updates on the crisis in Libya and Sudan… Trump intervenes and Egypt holds a tripartite meeting

Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, announced that he is making diplomatic moves to find solutions to the recent events taking place in Libya and Sudan, while receiving the heads of five African countries. This falls within a road map through which Trump aims to enhance regional stability in these regions through economic cooperation and political dialogue. Trump also stated in a statement that the United States of America aims for a “peaceful settlement in Libya and Sudan.”
For his part, Trump’s Special Advisor for African Affairs, Massad Boulos, stated that his country, after the success of America’s mediation in reaching a peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, now considers the Sudan crisis as a top priority, indicating the need for the solution to be entirely Sudanese, away from external interference, given that the conflict is entirely linked to power and not to economic reasons.
In a related context, Egypt decided to host a high-level tripartite meeting that included officials from Egypt, Libya, and Sudan, to consider the depth of common security challenges and rapid regional developments. The meeting included a discussion of means of ensuring cooperation and coordination between the aforementioned countries to maintain national security. Participants in the meeting highlighted the importance of achieving the highest interests of the peoples of the region, in line with the necessity of supporting stability and development.
Diplomatic sources indicate that these meetings come within the framework of persistent efforts to “bring closer the views” between the conflicting parties in Sudan, especially amid accusations of Major General Khalifa Haftar of providing military support to the Rapid Support Forces. In this context, the commander of these forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), sent positive messages to Cairo in a recent speech, declaring his readiness to begin a dialogue with the Egyptian authorities. At the same time, Hemedti confirmed that some Sudanese army leaders were the ones who deliberately disrupted communication with neighboring countries, in a move that indicates a clear desire to ease regional tensions.
These political and diplomatic moves demonstrate a regional and international goal of putting an end to the crisis that Sudan is experiencing, and preventing its expansion to neighboring countries, amid increasing proposals to launch a comprehensive political process that will put an end to the war and rebuild state institutions.
