NouakchottThe gasoline supply crisis continues in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, as gas stations witness long queues of vehicles, despite the government’s assurance that supplies are stable and that sufficient quantities are available to meet demand.
Drivers complain of hours of waiting that may end without obtaining fuel, as quantities run out at some stations, which has directly affected their transportation and daily activities, especially those working in transportation and delivery services who depend on their vehicles as a main source of income.
On the other hand, the Mauritanian Ministry of Energy and Oil confirmed that the market supply situation is “normal and stable,” noting the arrival of new shipments of gasoline and their distribution to gas stations, with the announcement of an additional shipment to enhance stock and ensure continuity of supplies, calling on citizens not to be led by rumours.
The roots of the crisis go back to the authorities’ refusal, about two weeks ago, to receive a shipment of gasoline after technical examinations showed that it did not comply with approved standards, which led to a delay in supplying the market and increased pressure on the available stock.
The authorities believe that the queues are also due to the increasing demand to buy quantities exceeding the normal needs, while citizens confirm that the scenes of long waiting and the continued running out of fuel at a number of stations reflect the continuation of the crisis on the ground.
These developments come in light of the repercussions of global energy market turmoil and high import costs, which places Mauritania facing continuing challenges to ensure the stability of fuel supply to the market.
