TehranThe funeral ceremony for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei began in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Friday, with the participation of officials from several countries and the presence of regional figures, in a funeral that the authorities described as the largest in the history of the Islamic Republic, while the ceremony recorded the first public appearance of the new Revolutionary Guard Commander, Ahmed Vahidi, since his appointment during the last war.
Crowds received Khamenei’s coffin and the coffins of a number of his family members inside the Great Prayer Hall in Tehran, where they were wrapped in Iranian flags and banners of mourning, marking the start of a ceremony that will continue until July 9, before his burial in the city of Mashhad.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Speaker of the Shura Council, Muhammad Baqir Qalibaf, along with senior Iranian officials, while the new guide, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not appeared in public until now.
Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commander Ahmed Vahidi also appeared in front of Khamenei’s coffin, in his first official appearance since his appointment as successor to Mohammad Pakpour after the outbreak of the war, according to what Iranian media showed.
The funeral witnessed the participation of official delegations from several countries, including Pakistan, Iraq, Armenia, Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to representatives of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements.
The ceremony also recorded the presence of the families of the late Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, and the leader, Imad Mughniyeh, in a move that reflected the presence of Iran’s regional allies during the funeral ceremony.
Khamenei’s death dates back to February 28, 2026, after American and Israeli raids targeted a complex containing his residence in Tehran, while his burial ceremony was postponed until after a memorandum of understanding was reached between the United States and Iran to stop the war and create security conditions for holding the funeral.
The Iranian authorities expected between 15 and 20 million people to participate in the funeral ceremony, with strict security measures imposed and a number of institutions, roads and airspace partially closed during the funeral period.
Khamenei’s body is expected to be transported to the city of Qom, before additional ceremonies are held in Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, and he will be buried next Thursday in the city of Mashhad near the shrine of Imam Reza.
