London –Reuters, citing three sources it described as informed, revealed that Iran had asked the Ansar Allah group (Houthis) to prepare to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait if the Iranian energy infrastructure was exposed to American strikes, in a move that may increase concerns about the security of navigation and global energy supplies.
According to the sources, this scenario was discussed within the Iranian leadership, before the message was conveyed to the Houthis, without clarifying whether this happened before or after US President Donald Trump’s statements in which he threatened to target Iranian energy facilities.
Reuters quoted a source close to the Houthis that the group had strengthened its preparations by deploying missiles and drones near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, indicating that the implementation of any such step would remain linked to the Iranian decision, according to the same source.
In the same context, the British newspaper The Telegraph, citing an unnamed source, reported that there were indications of coordination between the Houthis and the Somali Al-Shabaab movement, with the aim of strengthening influence in the vicinity of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, an information about which there was no official confirmation from the parties concerned.
The Bab al-Mandab Strait is one of the most important global sea lanes, as it connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, and constitutes a vital corridor for the movement of trade and oil supplies between Asia and Europe.
Neither Iran nor the Houthi group issued an official comment on what Reuters reported regarding these leaks, while the United States continues to accuse Tehran of supporting the Houthis militarily, which Iran constantly denies.
